There are many ways to design a portfolio as one tries to balance growth and risk. One method is to create a low volatility portfolio and use leverage to achieve the desired growth rate. There are many ways to achieve leverage in a portfolio such as margin, options, and futures. Leveraged ETF's provide another mechanism to leverage a portfolio that is much simpler and potentially cheaper than these other methods.
