Inverse and leveraged funds are a valuable tool for an investor. Some brokerage firms have already refused to trade these in order to "protect the investor". I am a 76 year old retired teacher/mathematician/programmer. I have enough fixed income to retire comfortably. But I have lots of savings that can not earn a reasonable income in the current market and low interest rates. Over my lifetime, I have traded stocks and learned the ins and outs of trading of trading leveraged funds. These are less risky than trading options. I have very easily made 30% on a basis of 15k in the last 3 months by jumping in and out of a 3x inverse fund. I am very often in and out in only a few hours. This is less than 5% of my net worth. The most dangerous tools I have found are trading on margin and trading options. I doubt margins and options will ever be banned and I don't think leveraged funds should be banned. Limits based on per cent of net worth might be appropriate - but I am not aware of any disasters with inverse funds like open ended losses with options and margin calls.
